Controversial sungura musician Hosiah Chipanga says President Robert Mugabe is a divine appointee who will only vacate the presidency when God identifies a suitable successor.
The Mutare-based musician, who is also the leader of little-known Messianic Apostolic Prophetic Inspired People’s Institute (Mapipi), makes the assertion in the song Zimbabwe Ndeye Mweya off his just-released four-track album called Mumweya.
In an interview with the Daily News Chipanga claimed that he had already sent a copy of the new album to Mugabe through Bishop Johannes Ndanga who leads the Apostolic Christian Churches of Zimbabwe (ACCZ). “I had to make available the album to him in advance because I didn’t want him to be taken by surprise when he hears the album,” Chipanga said at his home in Dangamvura suburb in Mutare.
The sungura artiste added that he would only announce a launch date for the album after he gets feedback from the president. This is the second time Chipanga who calls himself Mutumwa WaMwari, has defended Mugabe.
A few years back, the Mutare-based musician composed a song called Gushungo Haana Mhosva which claimed that well-connected Zanu PF members were using Mugabe’s name to pull off corrupt deals.
The third song titled Mateu 5 vs 13 heaps praise on Bishop Ndanga and the member churches of the ACCZ including Chipanga’s own church Mapipi. Mumweya, produced by Record and Tape Promotions (RTP), is a biblically-inspired album whose sound has been boosted by the introduction of a sub-rhythm guitar.
In the up-tempo and danceable Shoko raMwari, Chipanga says God’s word is sweet to those who match their faith with good works and very taxing to those who defy the creator. The veteran sungura artiste concludes his four-track album with the track Nharo in which he sings about the dire consequences that will befall those who fail to follow prophets of God.
Chipanga winds off the album with Nharo, a song in which he says disagreeing with prophets is an age-old phenomena that should not surprise anyone.
