LITTLE Monde has finally graduated as a sangoma. Three months ago, Daily Sun reported on six-year-old Monde Nhlazane of Emndeni South, who had spent more than a year in Soweto’s Green Village as a sangoma initiate.
Monde, who must be Mzansi’s youngest sangoma, got his calling when he was in pre-school.
But he needed a cow and a goat to graduate and work from home.Luckily for young Monde, a Good Samaritan who wants to remain anonymous was touched by the story and offered to pay for his graduation ceremony.
“I am doing this because the story touched me and this child is supposed to be at school,” she said.
Monde’s graduation ceremony took place on Saturday at Emndeni. Overjoyed mum Gift Mazibuko (42) said: “I am so excited my son is back home. It was a beautiful ceremony.”
She swelled with pride when he changed into his sangoma regalia and danced for the people.
Monde was initiated by his gobelas Gogo Nodoli and Mkhulu Mthelo who have been taking care of him since 2012.
Gobela Mthelo said Monde is ready to practise as a sangoma, but still needs to learn more about muthi. “He knows how to read the bones but he will need to go to school as well so he can be a properly educated sangoma,” he said.
His mother told Daily Sun that Monde will practise from home and will start grade one in the next school term at Zibambele Primary School.
“I cannot wait for him to go to school,” she said.
