It appears Zimbabwean dancehall music has virtually overtaken sungura if the Chipaz 10th anniversary celebrations are anything to go by. For starters, the three-day 10th anniversary was divided into three genres — there was the “Sungura Night” held on Friday, then the Zim Dancehall Party on Saturday and last but not least the “Family Show” held yesterday.
As much as the Chipaz anniversary celebrations had something for everyone, one could not ignore the fact that the “Sungura Night” was not as well attended as the Zim Dancehall Party.
Not only did Zim dancehall outshine their sungura counterparts in a charity match held on Saturday but also the youngsters also proved their worth in terms of being crowd favourites at the moment.
Earlier the football match pitting sungura musicians and Zim dancehall saw the youngsters winning by three goals to two courtesy of Dhadza D and one Jay C.
And for the sungura side it was Partson “Chipaz” Chimbodza and Mabla 10 who scored the two goals, while there was great defence from Victor Kunonga, BaShupi and Josh Hozheri.
There were laugh-out-aloud moments as musicians traded their microphones for the football boots.
Shinsoman had good control of the ball for the entire 90 minutes while King Shaddy showed that he was more than a musician by showcasing quality football.
Excitement was high in the crowd each time the Zim dancehall team took possession of the ball.
Even the absence of top musicians Alick Macheso, Suluman Chimbetu and Winky D did not in any way dampen the morale at Gwanzura Stadium, the venue of the Chipaz 10th anniversary celebrations.
Music and football fans were also not deterred by the showers that fell minutes after kick-off as there was plenty to watch and enjoy.
But later, it was non-stop music as Zim dancehall musicians took to the stage to thrill the fans who had gathered.
The crowd swelled after 8pm with more revellers trickling in before midnight.
Chipaz Promotions was launched in 2004 with a nightclub in Chitungwiza called Club Chipaz where it played host to some big names in show business.
After acquiring a promoter’s licence from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, the company started hosting big shows in and outside Harare.
Some of the shows that were successfully held include the “Zim Finest Gig”, “Dancehall Shutdown”, “The Big Four”, “Sungura Shutdown” and “Dancehall Fiesta”.
It was only last year that the company was recognised for its role when Chimbodza was named the Promoter of the Year at the National Arts Merit Awards.
A number of young musicians including Jah Prayzah, Kapfupi, Suluman Chimbetu, King Shaddy and Freeman have all been mentored by Chimbodza.
