Despite witnessing a bizarre incident when members of an apostolic sect and the police clashed in Budiriro 2 last Friday, the suburb came alive in the evening with musicians Oliver Mtukudzi and Sulumani Chimbetu sharing the stage at New Life Nightclub in Budiriro 1.
For close to two hours that Mtukudzi was on stage, the musician managed to keep fans on their toes with his yesteryear hits.
Songs “Watitsvata”, “Neria”, “Ndazunza” and “Roora” were among the songs that dazzled revellers.
Chimbetu joined Tuku on the song “Ndazunza” much to the delight of the crowd.
The show was well-attended.
Sulu took to the stage after Mtukudzi and he gave a polished performance.
The musician took fans down memory lane with songs from his late father and great song-man Simon. He belted out yesteryear hits such as “Gamba”, “Saina”, “Mamera” and “Dendera reSango” before Mtukudzi joined him to perform the song “Kata”.
As the musicians were dishing out their recipe of sumptuous melodies, Sulu’s bodyguard only known as Chiweshe, received a thorough hiding from an unidentified fan in unclear circumstances. Other Chimbetu aides had to come to his rescue. However, Chimbetu’s publicist Joe Nyamungoma, said they were humbled by the response they got from the people of Budiriro.
“I thought with the clash (between vapostori and the police) I thought we would not have a successful show but people came in their numbers to support us which is encouraging,” said Nyamungoma.
He said they were happy that Mtukudzi is one of the respected artistes to have joined Sulu in celebrating his birthday.
“Sulu has turned 32 and it was just unfortunate that mudhara (Tuku) was not there at the Book Cafe but he has to come to celebrate with us at this show,” he said.
Venue owner Fidelis Ngove, said despite power problems early in the show, he was happy with the maturity the fans had shown.
“At least they behaved well and were patient until we resolved the issue. Generally, it was a well-attended show and people enjoyed good music,” he said.
Upcoming musician Herbert Majeke, also performed at the show.
