STATEMENT – On behalf of all journalists in Zimbabwe, I unreservedly issue a stern warning towards Walter Magaya, leader of a religious grouping called Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD).
Magaya’s bouncers assaulted Chronicle’s Chief Photographer Elias Saushoma in Bulawayo on Thursday, for doing his job – in what apparently emerged to be consistent with their leader’s irrational and very puerile attacks on the media.
Magaya blamed the media for an adultery scandal implicating him, to the extent of labelling them ‘agents of the devil’.
While Magaya may be rightly entitled to his warped opinion about the media and at the same time exposing shocking ignorance of how media operate, he surely can’t be tolerated if he wants to be a menace that unleashes thugs at journalists doing their job.
We shall not tolerate such abuse of members of the profession, either by barbaric political thugs, or by religious players and their bouncers.
Magaya must heed the call and start respecting media professionals, while accepting the varied nature of coverage he gets.
It must also be important for Magaya to take time and be schooled on how there are provisions for him to seek redress if he feels shortchanged by media professionals, through coverage of him or his activities- rather than unleashing his thugs or resorting to religious threats and irrational attacks.
