Zimbabwe's First Lady has suggested extreme solutions for people who would commit rape or are "sexually troubled", according to The Africa Report
“Didn’t the President say when you are troubled, go and look for prostitutes?” Grace Mugabe reportedly said at a World Blood Donor Day event in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe on Saturday.
The First Lady allegedly also made comments that rapists who “abuse young girls” should be punished with decapitation which would also serve as a deterrent to these people who “have no place in normal society”.
In as much as Mrs Mugabe condemned rapists saying, it is “very bad” to “plant your seeds” in young girls, some groups did not receive her suggestions kindly.
Rose Benton from the Zimbabwe Vigil pressure group accepted that the First Lady didn’t want little girls raped but her suggestions were impractical. “The point is that so many prostitutes are there because of the poverty in Zimbabwe which has been created by the ZANU PF regime. If you are a mother and you’ve got to feed your children but you have no other work you go into it out of desperation, like a lot of respectable people”
Benton said Zimbabwe used to be a much more caring society and lamented that this has all been forgotten as people struggle to live with poverty and oppression. The solution is to fix the economy, create jobs and respect the basic human rights of citizens, Benton said.
