A TOP police officer and school heads from across Chivi district in Masvingo took turns to chant Zanu PF slogans at a development conference at the weekend.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Silence Pondo led a cast of civil servants and other government workers who took turns to chant “Pamberi neZanu PF, naVaMugabe, namai Grace Mugabe”.
The conference, convened by eccentric Chivi Rural District Council chairperson Killer Zivhu, was meant to pull resources and ideas together to turn around the fortunes of the semi-arid district.
Zivhu called on all those born in the district to chip in with “whatever you can and afford so that we extricate our home area from the precipice. Our people are on the verge of starvation and we need to do something as a matter of urgency”.
“As leaders and those with the means and born in this area, let us come together and assist. The time for promises is over. We want action,” said Zivhu.
Zivhu has in the past few years built orphanages and houses for the less-privileged members in the district while late last year he introduced a heifer program for traditional leaders that is meant to assist orphans and widows with tillage.
In April last year Pondo was grilled by a parliamentary committee on allegations that he was behind massive pilfering of gold through the Police Minerals Squad of which he was the head.
Legislators quizzed Pondo on how the police force handled minerals recovered from crime scenes including diamonds from Chiadzwa.
Pondo was later transferred by Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri in an internal clean-up exercise that also saw Oliver Chibage fired on charges of corruption.
Opposition parties in Zimbabwe have always argued that the ruling party has compromised government institutions with little difference between the former guerrilla movement and the State.
