The 23rd Session of the Children’s Parliament which opened this Saturday saw the young parliamentarians engage in robust debate over the issue of child marriages.
In his opening remarks at the parliamentary session Child President Samuel Nyarenda said early child marriages are a cancer that society must deal with decisively as they rob children of their future.
The young parliamentarians who also had time to debate the Child President’s speech all concurred that early child marriages are harmful to the prospects of young people’s growth.
Also contributing to the Child President’s speech Vice President and Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa said the constitution which is being realigned is very clear and anybody who engages in sexual activity with a girl between 12 and 16 is committing statutory rape.
The 23rd Session of the Junior Parliament commemorating the Day of the African Child was held under the theme: “25 Years After The Adoption Of The African Children’s Charter: Accelerating Our Collective Efforts To End Child Marriages In Africa.”
