THE top hierarchy of the group charged with plotting to illegally topple President Robert Mugabe turned up at the home of the late Zanu PF Harare chairman, Amos Midzi, Wednesday to console his family.
Midzi, who also served as an ambassador and cabinet minister, was found dead in his vehicle at his Beatrice farm on Tuesday morning.
He had recently been suspended from Zanu PF for allegedly being part of a claimed coup plot by former vice president Joice Mujuru who has since been fired from the ruling party and government.
Mujuru turned up at Midzi’s Harare home to pay her respects in the company of top allies Didymus Mutasa and Rugare Gumbo who were also expelled from the ruling party.
Midzi’s family said he would be buried at Harare’s Glen Forest Memorial Park on Saturday.
Speaking to the media, Gumbo said: “We are saddened by the sudden death of Cde Midzi. He was a gallant fighter and he had a bright future in politics.
“Cde Midzi did a lot for Zimbabwe as ambassador and recently as a Member of Parliament he was involved in issues relating to foreign affairs.
“We were all here, including Mai Mujuru, Mutasa and Bhasikiti. Mai Mujuru sent a message of condolence to the family.
“We want to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Midzi family.”
Meanwhile, police said a post-mortem had concluded that Midzi died from poisoning.
“A post-mortem was conducted on Midzi’s body,” said Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba in a statement.
“Three doctors concluded that the death was due to market pulmonary oedema due to poisoning and some further samples have been taken for toxicology and we are waiting for the results.”
