THE cash-strapped Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is appealing to Zimbabwean football fans to donate a dollar each to enable it to run its “affairs professionally”.
The association, whose debt is believed to be over $4 millio,n said the contributions would go a long way in "rehabilitating the game as well as opening new frontiers for football excellence".
ZIFA has struggled to finance national teams with the Warriors recently refusing to travel to Malawi for Nations Cup qualifier, protesting the non-payment of allowances.
The team missed their scheduled flight and ended up travelling by road, arriving on the eve of the tie which they won 2-1.
In a statement Thursday, ZIFA said its Dollar-For-Football Project would be administered through stringent and fool-proof financial accounting system and subjected to thorough audit.
The project is meant to mobilise material, financial resources for Zimbabwean national teams.
“Football is the most popular national sport whose beauty touches the entire nation, from Zambezi to Limpopo,” said the national association.
“The most popular game contributes to the nation’s image, social values and economic growth.
“The Zimbabwe Football Association appeals to all patriotic and football loving Zimbabweans local and living in the diaspora to spare one United State Dollars or equivalent in the material form.
“Once resourced, Zimbabwean football will scale heights never scaled before.”
The names of those who donate will be published on the association’s website.
