WHEN people saw a beaten man lying near a shopping centre, most of them just ignored him. They assumed he was a tsotsi who had got what he deserved.
But it turned out the 22-year-old was a job seeker who was lured into a scrap yard before being moered and allegedly raped at gunpoint by three men.
Residents of Phoenix, north of Durban were shocked to hear what had happened to the young man at Gem City Shopping Centre on Tuesday.
He is fighting for his life in hospital.
A shopper who didn’t want to be named said: “I was close to tears when I heard his story.
“He said he was from Ohlange in Inanda and came here on Monday looking for a job.
“He tried his luck at a scrap yard where the owner pulled out a gun and accused him of being a thug who had stolen from him. The young man was then raped and assaulted.
“He said the boss forced him to suck his and his workers’ 4-5s.”
Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of rape was opened at the Phoenix Police Station.
“A 22-year-old man was accused of stealing from a scrap yard and then assaulted and raped,” said Naicker.
