A Mutasa woman who stoned her abusive hubby with a brick after he assaulted her for plaiting her hair without his knowledge was recently spared jail by a local court.
Catherine Manesa, 38, of Mukoyi village attacked husband Newton Sagumbo, 52, with a brick on the head after he assaulted her for plaiting her hair without his knowledge. The husband died 10 days later.
Manesa told the court that she had tough times with her husband who always assaulted her, accusing her of being a prostitute.
Magistrate Livingstone Chipadze slapped Manesa with a wholly suspended three-year jail term.
One year was suspended on condition of good behaviour while the remaining two were suspended on the condition she performs community service at a local school.
The magistrate said he considered that Manesa was provoked and the husband was a violent person.
Prosecutors said sometime in January this year, Manesa left her husband at their homestead during the day going to a nearby river for laundry.
Later, she plaited her hair and went back home and found her husband away.
Sagumbo came back home during the night drunk and demanded to know where Manesa had been during the day.
He also wanted to know why she plaited her hair without his knowledge.
According to prosecutors, Sagumbo became angry, accusing his wife of being a prostitute and grabbed her plaited hair.
Manesa managed to escape but Sagumbo gave chase until his brother Raymond intervened and calmed him.
The brother then ordered Manesa to go to sleep at his homestead since Sagumbo was drunk and violent.
Manesa went back home to collect her four-year-old child but her husband assaulted her heavily.

To save herself, Manesa pushed Sagumbo and picked a brick. She hit Sagumbo on the head and ran away.
Sagumbo’s relatives went to his homestead and found him bleeding profusely sitting on the bed.
He was rushed to the hospital where he later died. Medical reports indicated that Sagumbo was seriously injured from the brick attack.
