Van Gaal was expected to select either Rashford or England Under-20 striker Ashley Fletcher for the Vicarage Road trip, since Anthony Martial and makeshift striker Marouane Fellaini are both injured, while Wayne Rooney is ill.
Mancunian Rashford is the latest teenage academy product to be promoted to the first-team in recent weeks, after Axel Tuanzebe's inclusion in the matchday squad at Crystal Palace and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's debut against West Brom.
Rashford has scored six goals in 11 Premier League Under-18 games this season, while he also netted a double in the Uefa Youth league win at PSV Eindhoven and a penalty against Wolfsburg.
Under-19 coach Nicky Butt said earlier this season: "Marcus is explosive, he’s a very talented boy but a good, hard worker as well. He’s a good lad to have in the side because he puts a shift in for the team. He’s explosive and he scores goals."
