Mr Ugly Goes Global

Mr Ugly Zimbabwe organiser, David Machowa – popularly known on the showbiz scene as Apama – has set his sights on Africa and the world, amid indications plans are underway to establish Mr Ugly Africa and Mr Ugly World, NewsDay has learnt.

Apama yesterday said the pageant, which has grabbed international headlines, was receiving overwhelming endorsements and this will see him flying to South Africa to meet potential partners, who have invited him for negotiations.

“When I started this pageant, as part of my comedy act, I did not know that at one point it will be endorsed as it has been. I will be in South Africa during the first week of December, meeting with several prospective partners, as we intend to host Mr Ugly Africa. If everything goes well, we will be hosting the event in South Africa,” he said.

Apama said there were several local and international corporates keen on partnering with him and he has since registered the pageant as a trust in line with his vision to run it in a professional manner.

“It is this time that my vision to celebrate ugliness is becoming a reality. I am planning to host Mr Ugly Africa, Mr Ugly Europe, Mr Ugly America and Mr Ugly Asia in preparations of Mr Ugly World to be staged in Zimbabwe in 2017,” he said.

“For Mr Ugly World, my dream is to bring Lady Gaga or Chris Brown to perform at the pageant that has amplified the visibility of Zimbabwean showbiz.”

The 28-year-old multi-talented Apama, who runs Apama Styles School of Theatre Arts and has been in the entertainment industry for the past 15 years, has many roles on the showbiz scene.

He has worked as a club DJ, taught dancing and done choreography work and emceeing (MC) at private gatherings.

Apama has also performed in several countries, among them Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Mexico and China.
