Facebook users across the globe have been showing their solidarity with people in Paris by overlaying their profile pictures with the colours of the French flag.

The social network is encouraging people to "support the people of France and the people of Paris" by customising their profile pictures.

Millions of people have already chosen to change their profile pictures in light of the atrocity which has left 129 dead and dozens more critically injured.

But Charlotte Farhan, editor of the online magazine, Art Saves Lives International, has publicly announced she will not be changing her profile picture following the terror attacks.

The French editor says it would be "wrong" to only do this following the Paris tragedy.

In a Facebook post, she said: "I won't be changing my profile to the French flag even though I am French and from Paris.

"The reason for this is that if I did this for only Paris this would be wrong.

"If I did this for every attack on the world, I would have to change my profile everyday several times a day".

"My heart is with the world, no borders, no hierarchy, I hold every human's life with value who is attacked by extremist beliefs whether they are based on religion, prejudice or profit!

"Don't be part of the "us and them" mentality which the war mongers want you to do!"

Art Saves Lives International is published every three months and highlights "issues which need a bigger voice".

What to do if you want to change your profile picture

If you wish to pay your respects and show your support, all you have to do is find a friend using the 'causes' feature in Facebook to customise their profile picture in your Facebook news feed.

All you have to do is click the 'Try it' button, located on the bottom right hand side of the box.

Facebook will then allow you to select your cause - currently, France is the only one listed - and customise your profile picture by changing its size and repositioning the image underneath the flag colours.

Use the drop-down menu to select the length of time you want your profile picture to last, then click 'Use as profile picture' and Facebook will automatically update.
