Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea last December.
United's pursuit of Mourinho, who has won 22 major trophies during his managerial career, has been hailed by many as a masterstroke by the Old Trafford hierarchy.
But Van Gaal, whose troops take on Chelsea later today, is refusing to believe that his bosses have made a move to replace him.
He said: “I cannot believe that there is a already a relationship between Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. I cannot believe that.
“Because I have seen what has been happening in the last two months and it was very difficult for me, for my wife, for my kids, for my grandkids, for my friends to cope with that.
