The family of US rapper Mos Def are allowed to stay in South Africa – for now.
The Cape Town High Court on Wednesday extended an interim order which states the family cannot be deported pending his on-going case. The matter returns to court next Friday.
The celebrity‚ who goes by the name Yasiin Bey‚ lodged an application in the Cape Town High Court earlier this month for his family to be allowed to stay in the country pending his court case for allegedly contravening immigration laws.
Bey was arrested last month when he tried to leave the country for Ethiopia using a “world passport“. His visa expires this month. His wife and four children were given two weeks to leave the country because their visas had expired in April 2014.
Bey’s attorney‚ Shaheid Schrueder‚ said: “There have been further deliberation behind the scene.”
He said the parties involved were trying to resolve the matter. Bey is out on R50‚000 bail and will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court next month. Sowetan
