The brutal crackdown by members of the military and the police on the civilians following last week’s #ShutdownZimbabwe protests have prompted a British lawmaker to call for his government to consider colonising the country in order to safeguard the lives of its citizens.
At least 12 people are reported to have been killed in the crackdown while hundreds more were brutally assaulted with others also maimed. Speaking in the British House of Lords, independent crossbench peer Lord Palmer asked,
Has the minister even considered the idea of recolonising Zimbabwe? It is tragic to see what is going on.
British Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon confessed that he had not considered the option. Said Lord Ahmad,
I have to be very honest as I always am, that is not an option I have personally considered.
British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa not to take the country back to the dark days of former President Robert Mugabe. Writing on Twitter, Hunt said,
Please don’t turn back the clock People should have the right to peaceful protest without fear of violence.

Another British peer, Lord Hayward added that Zimbabwe should not be readmitted into the Commonwealth as it was not worthy due to the wanton killing of its own citizens. Said Hayward,
Is it not clear that a government which is willing to shoot its own subjects, in most cases apparently for no reason whatsoever, should not be a member of the Commonwealth?
