In a turn of events the family of the late music maestro Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi has trashed all memorial events and gigs that were held in his honour.
In a press statement, the family stated the gigs that had already been held were not legitimate as they did not have the backing of the family.
several memorials events have been held in the name of the late national hero, with his daughters Sandra and Selmor participating at one of the events in South Africa. The statement seems to suggest an internal power struggle brewing in the family which fans have interpreted as an effort to elbow Tuku’s daughters from his legacy.
The statement drew widespread criticism with the widow Daisy being subject of attacks for allegedly shutting out Mtukudzi’s children, with his first wife Melody Murape, Selmor and Sandra, who have performed at the events before.
This is not the first time the widow has been in the limelight for the wrong reasons, as she was fingered for sidelining Tukus first wife from the funeral after she allegedly gave the M.C orders not to includer her in the proceedings.
According to the statement the first official event will be held in Capetown Jazz festival, with Tuku’s band performing.
” We are still trying to come to terms with the loss of our pillar of strength and as such we have not engaged any organisation or individual to organise plan any events on behalf and for the Mtukudzi family here in Zimbabwe or elsewhere. We would like to distance ourselves from any events or gatherings that are being held in the name of the Mtukudzi family as we are still greaving.” reads the statement.
