Simphiwe Dana: South African Men Are The 'Biggest Gold Diggers'

Simphiwe Dana stirred controversy on Sunday night when she labelled South African men as a bunch of hustlers 'biggest gold-diggers' who are only after wealth to the extent of wanting to benefit from maintenance money.

The Afro-soul and 'Ilolo' singer, posted on her social media account; "Truth is that South African men are the biggest gold diggers. They even dig the maintenance money."

She added that they lazily want to be taken care of in everything, from airtime, rent to food.

She added: "Bacela iUber (they ask for Uber) . Ubathengele iairtime (you buy them airtime). Ubabhatalele irent (pay for their rent) . They're driving your car. Using your bank card. And you're paying all the bills. Shameless. Still have the audacity to go out there and say they're taking care of you. That you a gold digger. They're not paying maintenance."

However, she was put on the hook for her sentiments and 'Simphiwe Dana Must Fall' and rose on the Twitter trends list, with South African men trying to defend themselves.

Meanwhile, she got support from some of her own, as some South African women stood by Dana's position and supported her sentiments.

She is known for speaking her mind, at one time she joined the number of Mnakwethu viewers who slammed the aim of the show and the unsettling pattern of the male participants seemingly distorting the traditions around polygamy to suit their personal desires.

She took to Twitter at that time to spit fire, saying the show was blatantly humiliating women for entertainment and no one seemed to be doing something about it.

"Is Mnakwethu the African tradition hill y'all are willing to die to? I say y'all because it could never be me. Women being humiliated like this could never have my stamp of approval. I can't even believe that it's being flighted. Surely we have rights as women," she said then.

Her comments landed her in hot water, with some slut-shaming her and accusing her of making such conclusions as a result of dating younger men, while others called her out for her generalisations.
"I don't date kids… Slut-shaming women for having sex is the lowest denominator too. And apparently, South Africans excel at this too. To run away from responsibility because gold diggers. Both my kids from one SA, Xhosa man. Y'all are trying so hard to slut-shame me," she said to her critics.

Actor Hlomla Dandala commented: "I'm a South African man. When you say 'South African men are …' you include me. As I would inadvertently be including you if I said 'South African women are…' Freedom of speech still requires us to be responsible for the word we speak and the people affected by them," while Welcome Kgoloko said: "This cycle of generalisation does nothing but increase mediocrity with regards to the parenting of the boy child. Women have found comfort and solace in resentment towards the male gender based on their individual experiences. Invite God unto your dark spaces, not social media."
