The two queens started off their live with complimenting each other for how beautiful they looked. Geena started off by stating that it is great to celebrate pride month but one should know the historical context of celebrating pride month. She went onto explain the origin of the Pride Month and why it was started. She stated that Pride is a riot started as a Stonewall riot that was focused on empowering the LGBTQ community as they were being dehumanized and from that day, people would say Pride Month as their modern civil rights movement for LGBTQ community. Geena further added that this movement has made a major effect throughout the whole world as the people took over the streets to make sure that the collective voices are heard.
Zozibini added to the conversation while stating that she tweeted about Pride Month because she wanted to celebrate the Pride Month but also want to celebrate the basic human rights. The two spoke about gender stereotypes and how much it is important for people to understand. Geena mentioned that it is very important for everyone especially the LGBTQ community to understand their representation in the society. Zozibini thanked Geena for motivating, supporting, and inspiring people to find themselves and accept the way as they are and not as how society wants to be.
She also mentioned that helping people to not be scared and stepping out of their comfort zone takes a lot of courage and she feels immensely blessed to be able to chat with her.
Zozibini asked Geena about her decision to use the TED’s platform to come out and share her story and she complimented Geena that she was touched with her story and felt more inspired. Geena stated that TED’s platform has helped her to change a lot in recent areas.
She went onto explain that she was a working model in the city of New York when she decided to come out with her sexuality as she felt the power of visibility and imagery over-shadowing her personality and it affected her in a way that she got emotional and when she turned 30, she felt like she needed to share her story. Zozi complimented her for her confidence and courage to be able to share her story to the entire world and said that maybe it because of the beauty pageant training.
The two spoke much more about the Pride Month stories and how much this means to Geena and the entire LGBTQ community.
