Reality TV host and actress, Pearl Thusi broke into tears on national TV in an emotional interview she shared with Khanyi Mbau about colourism.
This happened after Khanyi explained how her fall resulted in Pearl’s rise.
She revealed that she landed a gig with the SABC and shortly after finding out her ex leaked her nudes which led to her losing the gig.
Khanyi disclosed that Pearl Thusi was second in line for the job and that’s what seemed to have triggered Pearl’s emotional rant.
Pearl broke into tears while expressing how exhausted she is over constantly being told that her success is the result of light skin privilege.
“I can’t change how I look and if I did, you’d still be mad,” she said.
“I work very hard for what I have and if my light skin is going to help feed my kids and that’s what you want to believe…you know what, believe what you want to believe,” Pearl added.
Who better to share the conversation with than Khanyi Mbau who has received the first-hand experience of the matter at hand.
Khanyi confronted Pearl and told her she needed to heal from the negative comments and keep her chin up.
“I’m not going to baby you and say “yeah, I understand”. Hey girl we all have been through a lot. Get over it, block the noise, and be you”.
Social media users took to Twitter to share their opinions on colourism in the industry.
“So Pearl Thusi had a conversation of being light skinned and denying the benefits of it again with someone who bleached their skin,” one user wrote.
“Wild. The joke wrote itself, Khanyi is a case study for the impact of colourism” said another.
Some tweeps sympathized with Pearl stating that hating on her and belittling her work because she is light-skinned is not the solution.
No one is saying Pearl should turn down gigs but refusing to acknowledge that she has an advantage over her counterparts is the problem.
