Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry who was detained after a Harare magistrate had ordered her to undergo a mental examination has been released by the High Court.
Marry is facing allegations of money laundering, assault and attempted murder in cases that are pending at the lower courts but her lawyers had submitted that she cannot stand trial due to her health.
The State disputed the submission and last week filed an application before magistrate Lazini Ncube for her to be detained for 10 days so that she can be assessed by two state doctors.
After filing an appeal, two High Court judges on Monday ordered her immediate release.
Mubaiwa’s lawyer Doug Coltart said:
High Court Orders Marry Chiwenga’s Immediate Release |
“They said it was completely unjustified that she was detained when she was already out on bail and ordered her release from custody.”
In other news, Africa Metro had reported that Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has said thirteen inmates at Hwange Prison were hospitalised on Friday after they were struck by lightning while having lunch in the prison courtyard.
ZPCS spokesman Superintendent Peter Chaparanganda said the inmates were rushed to the hospital after suffering varying degrees of burns.
“All the 13 were rushed to St Patrick’s Hospital. Four of them suffered serious burns while the other nine were said to be stable. The four were referred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo for further management,” said Chaparanganda said.
