Zimbabwe beat Guinea 2-1 in their final Group B match last night. “We go home with some pride and that is what is important for us,” said Mapeza.
Mapeza will wonder what might have been after they came within the final seconds of holding Algeria in their first match only to concede a last-gasp penalty.
Norman Mapeza said his Warriors will now fly back home with their pride intact after they ended a 16-year wait for victory at the AFCON finals. Two defensive blunders also saw them lose 2-1 to Malawi in a match they dominated. Not since their win over a World Cup-bound Ghana, at the 2006 Nations Cup finals, in Egypt, had the Warriors won at this level of the game.
It also means that all the three victories for the Warriors, at the AFCON finals, have come in the final match of their campaign. They have all ended 2-1 in their favour. Their first win was a 2-1 victory over Algeria in the final match of their 2004 AFCON finals campaign in Tunisia.
Joel Luphahla and the late Adam Ndlovu were on target for the Warriors that day. Yesterday, captain Knowledge Musona and Kudakwashe Mahachi were on target in the first half, to hand Zimbabwe a farewell win, after losing their opening two matches.
