Will Smith and Jada Pinkett’s marriage is one of the most topical and controversial unions to date. Their unconventional marriage always raises eyebrows. The couple tied the knot on New Year’s Eve of 1997.
Since then, Will and Jada Pinkett have proven they have a bond that can’t be broken even though their marriage is a hot mess. It is no doubt their marriage has always been a little bit strange and red flags have always been there from the onset but Will Smith still chose to ignore them.

1. Jada Never wanted to get married. After two years of dating Jada found out she was pregnant with their first child together and Will Smith decided to pop the question. Jada reportedly accepted the proposal under duress.
Speaking during one of the episodes of her famous Red Table Talk, Jada revealed that she never wanted to get married in the first place. She claimed that her mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones pressured and guilt-tripped her into getting married.
Will even admitted in his memoir that he pressured her into having a traditional ceremony when she didn’t want a typical wedding.
“This would be the first of many compromises Jada would make over the years that painfully negated her own values,” Will Smith said.
A wedding day is supposed to be a women’s happiest day as many studies show, however, for Jada, this was not the case as she didn’t even want to be there in the first place.
” I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I cried the whole way down the aisle,” she said.
2. Jada Pinkett’s Refusal To Accept Will Smith’s Surname: Even though Will Smith knew that she didn’t want to get married in the first place he still went ahead with the wedding.
After they got married Jada refused to take Will Smith’s surname and her reason was that she feared she would be criticized for failing to be an independent woman.
3. Jada’s 40th birthday: Will Smith spent 3 years planning for his wife’s birthday only for Jada to throw it back into his face. On Jada’s 40th birthday, Will threw her a party and suprised her with a documentary that chronicled her life and traced her family lineage up to slavery.

4. Jada Pinkett’s Bond With Tupac: Jada Pinkett and the late legendary rapper Tupac had a very close relationship when he was still alive. Their strong bond has always been a threat to their marriage even after Tupac’s death. Despite long-running rumours that Jada and Tupac were in a romantic relationship, the actress – Jada has always denied this.
The bond between Jada and Tupac prompted many people to believe that Jada used Will as a rebound. Will Smith even confessed in his memoir that he felt tortured by the bond Tupac and Jada shared.
5. Willow Smith’s Letter To Tupac: Will Smith’s daughter Willow once penned a heartbreaking letter to Tupac begging for him to return.
In the letter, Willow Smith claimed that Tupac was still alive. Willow wrote;
“Dear Tupac, I know you are alive someplace. I think that my mommy misses you. Can you come back so mommy and I can be happy! I wish you were here… I really do! Love, Willow”.
6. When their relationship stopped being monogamous because Jada never believed in a conventional marriage. There are rumours that Will Smith and Jada were in an open relationship. In an interview with GQ, Will Smith said marriage for them can not be a prison. They don’t consider themselves spouses but instead “life partners. ” Jada on the other hand said that she and Will trusted one another to do whatever they wanted, and that meant their marriage is instead “a grown one.”
7. When rumours about Jada Pinkett having an affair with Jennifer Lopez’ then-husband Marc Anthony surfaced. Jada Pinkett was rumoured to be having an affair with Marc Anthony. Even though they denied the rumours, Jada and Anthony were engaged in an “inappropriately close” friendship.
8. When Jada had an entanglement with August Alsina. Rumour has it that Will Smith even gave Alsina his blessings. At first, Jada denied having a relationship with Alsina but she confirmed she did date Alsina in an episode of her talk show Red Table Talk, as Will sat opposite her.
Jada confirmed her involvement with August Alsina was “absolutely” a relationship, saying: “From there, as time went on, I got into a different kind of entanglement with August.”
In her defence, she claimed she and Will were separated at that time.
