Political analyst and former advisor to the late Morgan Tsvangirai, Dr Alex Magaisa, has died. He was 46.
The news was first shared by Zimbabwean academic and author Ibbo Mandaza before journalist Hopewell Chin’ono confirmed it on Twitter. Dr Magaisa suffered a cardiac arrest this morning at Margate Hospital in the United Kingdom.
Twenty-eight minutes before sharing the news, Hopewell Chin’ono had hinted that a dark cloud had befallen the country, before informing his followers that he will share the information once the family of the deceased gave him the green light.
Dr Magaisa was a Law lecturer at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom.
From 2012-2023, he served as the Advisor of the then Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai. Dr Magaisa was also part of the core group that advised COPAC, which was tasked with drafting the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which was passed in 2013.

The prolific academic attained his first law degree from the University of Zimbabwe, before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Warwick in 1999. In 2003, Magaisa was conferred with a PhD in Law from the same institution.
Dr Magaisa appeared on the BBC, AL Jazeera, Radio 702 in South Africa and the SABC, among other international platforms, to share his views and opinions on Zimbabwean political developments.
He was also the founder and writer of The Big Saturday Read, “a platform designed to critically examine legal and political matters pertaining to Zimbabwe, Africa and the world in general”.
