Ximex dealers who sell cellphones, foreign currency and clothes in the area between Innez Terrace and Angwa Street near Zimpost offices in the Harare CBD have declared Saturday as a ‘Sandals Day’ to prove that they still have their toes.
Of late, stories have been circulating that people are selling off their toes so they can be rich. Rumours are that the dealers at Ximex started with this gory trade and most of them are scared of wearing sandals as they do not have toes.
Unverified screenshots flying around on WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook suggest that some sell their toes for as much as US$40,000 for the big toe, US$25,000 for the middle toe and US$10,000 for the tiny toe.
Speaking to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the dealers said they would be coming to work on Saturday wearing sandals to prove beyond doubt that they did not sell off their toes. One dealer said:
This Saturday, we have planned that every dealer comes to work wearing sandals. Whether they stack the sandals in the car or in their satchels on their way to work, everyone should wear their sandals here so that we prove to the whole country that we are clean.
As the ZBC news crew was reporting on them, the dealers took off their shoes and displayed their feet for the camera to show they still had their toes. Another dealer, Tafadzwa Murengwa, said he is being approached by people inquiring about how they can also have their toes cut and sold for riches.
So far I have been approached by over 20 people who, after seeing my car, say they also want to sell their toes. Yet I still have all my toes.
Yesterday, the deputy minister of Information, Publicity & Broadcasting Services Kindness Paradza went to Ximex to investigate if the dealers are indeed selling off their toes.
