Zimbabwean mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Themba Gorimbo has landed a lucrative contract with the Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
This is quite a feat, considering that Gorimbo was once homeless and staying on the streets of South Africa (SA).
The fiercely determined Zimbabwean, who is affectionately known as “The Mamba” signed for the greatest mixed martial arts stage, the UFC, on Tuesday. This takes him a step closer to realising his dream of becoming the first Ultimate Fighting Championship champion from Africa.
Themba Gorimbo took to social media on Wednesday to announce that he had signed for UFC.
“I want to, first of all, thank God for granting me the gift to fight for everything i want in my life.
“To my manager @jasonkhouse brother you are the man and I really love you brother and to @seanshelby thank you for giving me the platform to be in the best promotion in the world (I will be a champion in @ufc and my story shall inspire everyone around the world )
“My family, friends, teammates, coaches, clients, sponsor and everyone who has been truly supportive through this journey i say thank you for putting up with me and you all better buckle up (it’s about to get wild )
“It all started with me watching the movie Never Back Down and I’ve never backed down ever since 2010.
“It’s been tough and i expect nothing but tougher tests and competition going further.
“God bless everyone who is happy for this moment.
Now let’s go do work.
“Buckle up for the Mamba Show”
We look forward to Gorimbo achieving his dream of being Africa’s first UFC champion after the struggles he went through, which include being homeless in SA.
Gorimbo became an orphan when he lost his mother at the age of nine and his father at the age of thirteen. He was forced to grow up quickly as he had to learn how to fend for himself at a young age.
This included illegal diamond panning in the Marange diamond fields in Eastern Zimbabwe.
After nearly dying several times, he crossed the border and went to South Africa at the age of 17. Following his arrival in SA, he went homeless and was forced to sleep on the streets until he connected with some relatives.
While working a series of odd jobs to make ends meet, Gorimbo discovered his passion for MMA and persevered to make it big.
