“Sniper Storm, (real name Donald Chirisa) is still in the game contrary to what some may believe. He has grown musically over the past few years and is now in the big league.”These were the sentiments of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Supa Mandiwanzira.
He was officiating the launch of Sniper Storm’s seventh album, “Silver Bullet” on behalf of Minister Jonathan Moyo at Private Lounge last Thursday night.
“Sniper is one of the pioneers of Zim-dancehall. I know that there are people who were thinking that Sniper apera because he was not releasing singles like what upcoming artistes are doing. He has built his brand and now just like big artistes, Tuku, he drops anticipated albums once in a while,” he said.
Mandiwanzira handed Sniper Storm US$1 000 from minister Moyo’s personal coffers in support of the “Silver Bullet” project. It attracted a thunderous applause from crowd.
He took time to advice Zim-dancehall artistes to desist from spreading immorality through music.
“I am a big fan of Sniper Storm. I am also a fan Zim-dancehall and Zimbabwean music as a whole. I would like to encourage local artistes to use music to communicating messages that take the country forward. A lot of talent is going to waste because the content is too explicit. Artistes should create clean versions of their songs for radio,” he said
Sniper returned the favour by putting up an impressive act for the rest of the show. He sampled songs from the new album that included “Musandipopotere”, “Ndisimudzeiwo, “King Solomon” “Mbama Yemupurisa” and “Musikana ane Tundebvu”
Other songs include “Gotsi Papata” that features Jah Prayzah and “Vanhu Vasinganamate”
While Sniper Storm boasts of powerful and aggressive vocals and lyrics, he needs work on his overall act.
He is not as active as other dancehall artistes on stage but his act would be better with some choreography, lively backup singers and dancers.
The event was also graced by Zimbabwe music rights association (Zimura) Albert Nyathi who gave words of encouragement to the general
The support comes as an ego boost for the artiste who failed to get recognition for his last album “Dongfeng” at the inaugural Zim-dancehall awards.
