Apostle Kapandura is one misread and often misquoted servant of God.
One online publication even boldly stated that ‘he must be stopped’ because of his perceived vulgar orations.
Contrary, as the uninformed writer spewed vitriol upon the servant of God, the ‘commander’ to his legion of admirers, continues to transform lives, especially amongst the youth. To those who have genuinely offered his sermons an impartial ear, they will testify that his genuine talk is aligned with the current global social challenges, especially character building.
Understanding the man
In his own church they call him, ‘the aunt’. This is tittle that he attracted because of his uncompromising stand towards sexual purity; his constant call to preserve the marriage unity and conserving the Christian character.
In short, he is a declared conservative within the family unity.
Traditionally, aunties were meant to counsel youths and offer direction in marriages. Because of different challenges, their role has been substituted by social media. Even dating and courtship has been invaded by dating sites, thereby relegating the traditional way into oblivion.
Biblically, sex is a preserve of the marriage unit. Many youths have been attracted and persuaded to engage in premarital sex, often inflicted with dire results. The rate of sexual infections, teenage pregnancy and death amongst the youths is appalling. This, sadly has left many people dumfounded and without possible answers.
But steadfast servants of God such as apostle Kapandura have arisen.
Who is the man?
The uncompromising communicator, who is also the international youth advisor within the ZAOGA FIF ministry, was born again in 1970. This year, he celebrates 45 years in ministry. He has seen it all, as a youthful pastor until his current rank as an overseer for 26 years. He is one preacher who calls everything as it is. Contrary, to African belief that speaking to children about sex is taboo, he has chosen to be different.
Without full knowledge, many have started to experiment in sexual intercourse. Apostle Kapandura has chosen to identify the problem and reveal every action to the benefit of his listeners. Though many have sought to silence his preaching, but they are the same who are quick to blame the church if youths fail. When the church is silent, people criticise it even more. According to him, his defence of virginity, sexual purity is a way to emphasise the biblical principles.
On December 20, 2014, the ‘commander’ as he affectionately calls himself, arrived at Glory Ministry, Bethel worship Centre. The event was the Kabod Youth Festival. The atmosphere was expectant. This writer was waiting in anticipation. The man came to the conference by grace because he was fully booked to preach elsewhere.
And when offered such a platform, he never frustrates.
A personal encounter
I heard one of his sermons a few years back. Like others, I was quick to dismiss his talk. One of the reasons was his explicit rendition of details, much to the ‘shame’ of listeners. Unfortunately, our youths are learning from the wrong sources. As he dwelt into his sermon, we were left agape. As he dished out examples, my mind raced to his sermons I had listened previously. Now, I was face to face with the man behind the so-called controversial sermons.
After meeting him, my life has been transformed.
‘I was groomed in a Godly atmosphere,’ he began, ‘opportunities were abundant, but you don’t take everything. You are not an ordinary person. A Christian says no to temptation, you are different from the rest. A Christian must be filled with the word, you cannot be defeated by something you can control. Stop abusing your body for cheap things, your marriage is not cheap. Keep yourself holy. You will be married, don’t rush.’
He was not done yet.
‘Learn to have self-control, just like what Joseph did when he was tempted by the lustful Portifa’s wife. The types of friends you choose, makes you to backslide. Be a bold person. Sugar daddies waste your time. Something useful must happen to you. You will be the first one to prosper. Be a bold person.’
His deliverance is often punctured by explicit explanations that may be unprintable, but according to him, this has moulded many youths within and without the church to faithfully wear the chastity belt, and only release it after marriage, including his own three children.
To me, the wise apostle is a yardstick for self-control and discipline amongst sprouting delinquency and sin. It is better for one to endure a moment of shame when the ‘commander’ speaks, rather than endure a lifetime of disgrace because everyone is embarrassed to counsel the youths.
