A MAN from Nkayi fatally struck his 80-year-old father with an axe after the elderly man asked him to wash a dirty shovel, a High Court session in Hwange was told this week.Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Martin Makonese who is on circuit in Hwange, heard that 43-year-old Vusumuzi Ngwenya was incensed when his father rebuked him for not washing the shovel.
The gruesome murder occurred on 2 June last year at Manduwe Village under Chief Mpumelelo.
Ngwenya allegedly sneaked into his parents’ bedroom hut at night and used an axe to kill his unsuspecting father Harry Ngwenya when his mother Lukani Ngwenya had gone out to relieve herself.
Details of the case are that on the fateful day, at about 6pm, the father instructed Ngwenya to clean a dirty shovel.
“Later the deceased asked the accused if he had cleaned the shovel resulting in a misunderstanding between the two as the latter had not carried the instruction,” said Namatirai Ngwasha prosecuting.
At around 10pm, the court was told, the father retired to bed with his wife. The wife woke up to go and relieve herself.
Vusumuzi, who was probably monitoring, allegedly sneaked into the hut and used an axe to silence his father.
The court heard that the mother returned to the hut after 40 minutes and found the horrific scene — husband lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries on the forehead after which she screamed and bolted out of the hut.
Vusumuzi then told neighbours about his father’s “untimely” but later confessed to members of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee that he was responsible for the killing.
Justice Makonese ruled that he should be examined by two medical doctors to ascertain his mental state before the trial continues. — Online
