Controversial Zimdancehall artiste Lady Squanda says she is peerless and as such should never be compared to any Zimbabwean female chanter.
The emergence of a new crop of female chanters like Darula, Empress Shelly, Bounty Lisa, Ninja Lipsy and Juwela has prompted some Zimdancehall fans to predict the end of Lady Squanda’s reign as Zimbabwe’s eminent female chanter.
But the cocky musician has laughed off the perceived threat on her crown posed by emerging female chanters.
“I feel very disrespected and belittled to be compared to unknown artistes such as Lipsy,” said Lady Squanda.
“I am peerless; none of the new Zimdancehall artistes are in my league. I have no competition at all.”
The boastful artiste, who has won two consecutive Zimdancehall Awards Female Artiste of Year gongs, curiously claimed that she is among few genuine dancehall talents in Zimbabwe.
“There are few real dancehall musicians in Zimbabwe and these include Lady Squanda, Winky D and Kinnah.The rest are just wasting their time,” said the Ndinovhaira hit maker.
Lady Squanda, who seems to relish being rated against male musicians, has just dropped a song titled Hameno Akamutengera Altezza in which she ridicules Soul Jah Love and his wife Bounty Lisa as well as Seh Calaz.
In the same song Squanda claims that Bounty Lisa is an ugly woman who resembles her equally ugly husband Soul Jah Love. The mother of one adds that Soul Jah Love and Seh Calaz are close buddies who pretend to be sworn enemies in their songs.
Interestingly, Lipsy, who burst into the limelight when she did a duet with Winky D titled Taitirana, also regards herself as Zimbabwe’s ultimate female chanter.
“I believe in myself and I consider myself to be the best female Zimdancehall artiste in Zimbabwe,” said Lipsy who was born Tendazvaitwa Chitimbe.
“I am happy that more female artistes are joining music industry but we should not necessarily be in competition.”
Lipsy, who says she is inspired by Winky D and Empress Shelly, does not believe that Lady Squanda is the most talented female dancehall artiste in Zimbabwe.
“The criteria used at Zimdancehall Awards (won for two consecutive years by Squanda) was a bit biased. How can they compare a seasoned artiste to upcoming artistes?” she said.
For Midlands State University (MSU) student Juwela, Ninja Lipsy and Empress Shelly are more talented than Lady Squanda.
“I rate Lipsy and Empress Shelly highly. I only respect Squanda for being among the female pioneers in the Zimdancehall music industry,” said Juwela, a fourth year Media and Society Studies student.
But Darula, whose real name Dorothy Karengo (20), praised Lady Squanda as Zimbabwe’s best female chanter.
“Ndichiri mupfanha pana Squanda.Like I said she is my mentor so I cannot be compared with her. She is big in the industry and I respect that,” said Darula.
“At the moment I am not having live shows, I am focusing on recording and learning from Squanda and Freeman.”
