PROPHETIC Healing and Deliverance Ministries leader Walter Magaya says he is surprised Zifa have gone quiet on the Valinhos debt after he pledged to help them settle the US$81 000 owed to the former Warriors coach.
Zimbabwe were in March expelled by Fifa from taking part in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after Valinhos won his case to recover his dues from Zifa.
With just over a month left before the World Cup qualifying draw is held in Russia, cash-strapped Zifa are now running against time to settle the amount.
Soon after Zimbabwe were kicked out by Fifa, Magaya promised to help get Zimbabwe readmitted for the qualifiers for the Russia 2018 World Cup.
But yesterday he said Zifa have been silent on the issue.
“I thought Valinhos had been paid his dues. No one (at Zifa) came back to me about it. I am just waiting for the Zifa guys to talk to me about it,” said Magaya at Rufaro Stadium where he had gone to watch the Warriors train in preparation for Sunday’s Chan qualifier against Comoros at the same venue.
Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze could not give an update on the Valinhos debt.
Zifa have of late been turning to Magaya for financial assistance to fulfill national team assignments, as well as pay players’ allowances.
However, yesterday Magaya claimed Zifa are abusing the money intended for players.
“I wasn’t very happy on the issue of the (R560 000) rands (about US$54 000) I gave to the players. Some of them did not get it, including the coach,” said Magaya.
“My support is going towards these boys. This must be very clear. Mr Mashingaidze my support is not for you or Zifa. I am not a political person. My support is for these guys … You understand? Whatever I give must go straight to these boys. Is that clear?” Magaya said while Mashingaidze stood by his side, stunned by the statement.
“To the players, express yourselves. I watched some good football in Malawi (where the Warriors beat national side the Flames 2-1 in a Nations Cup qualifier last Saturday). I have seen the Under-23s also play some good football. My desire is to see your game improve. It must be clear that I am with you. Just maintain your high spirits,” said Magaya as he addressed the players after the training session.
Yesterday the Warriors who travelled to Malawi were paid their allowances by Magaya.
