The rats are immune to poison and the parents say they are now making even back gardens “unsafe for children to play in”.

Neighbourhood Association secretary Richard Rowlands said the rats were gnawing parked cars in the street, in driveways and even in people’s garages.

He said: “It’s horrific. You feel the food in your home could be contaminated.”
