The Napoli striker has scored 32 goals this season and they value the Argentina international at an incredible £95m.
But with the 28-year-old only having two years left on his contract the Serie A club will likely drop their asking price.
Current boss Van Gaal will leave Old Trafford despite the possibility of the club winning their first FA Cup since 2004.
Mourinho has wanted to be United's boss for some time and will reportedly get his chance next season.
