Government says it remains committed to support the growth of the quail farming industry as well as the sustainable management of the wildlife.
This comes after the same ministry last week announced the suspension of trade in the birds to pave way for the carrying out of a comprehensive study of production and selling of the birds, which have become a hit on the local market.
On Friday, Environment Water And Climate Minister, Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri said government acknowledges the benefits that quail farming and trade has generated, but said the business has to be done in a sustainable manner and should be well regulated.

"There is no need for panic on the market as the ministry is fully behind the commercial production and trade of the birds given the huge benefits in improving the livelihoods of various communities. However, the area of concern is the unlawful capture of wild quails which does not promote sustainable conservation," said Mr Prince Mupazviriho, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate.
Tamed quails and the commercial production of the birds which is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry Of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development remains legitimate.
Quail faming has become a lucrative business which has created a lot of economic activities for the country’s citizens.
