Three Other Gambian Ministers Quit Jammeh's Government

Three days to the end of term of outgoing Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, three other ministers in his government have resigned on Monday.

They include Foreign Minister Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, Finance Minister Abdou Kolley and Trade Minister Abdou Jobe.

This follows last week’s resignation of Communication Minister Sheriff Bojang, who fled the country, and Sports Minister Alieu Jammeh.

All the resigned ministers were immediately replaced by Yahya Jammeh.

The political impasse in The Gambia created by Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to transfer power to opposition candidate and President-elect Adama Barrow remains unresolved.

Many Gambians are reportedly fleeing the country to neighbouring Senegal after the army pledged support for Yahya Jammeh ahead of Thursday’s inauguration of Barrow.

ECOWAS has attempted resolving the issue by convincing Jammeh to step down, yet mediation efforts remain inconclusive.

Adama Barrow is currently living in Dakar since Sunday at the request of the ECOWAS chairperson Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Senegalese President Macky Sall agreed on Saturday to host Barrow until his inauguration on Thursday when he will be escorted by some African leaders to the event.

President Yahya Jammeh’s petitions at the Supreme Court to annul and rerun the December 1 polls, as well as halt the inauguration have not yielded any fruit as a result of the unavailability of judges who only seat in May and November.

Jammeh on Monday appealed to the Chairman of ECOWAS, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in a televised phonecall to help facilitate the release of judges to sit on the election petition filed by his party.

Despite being displeased about the broadcast which she had no knowledge of, President Sirleaf said she will consult other ECOWAS leaders on Jammeh’s request.
