At the Leaders’ Summit on Refugees, organized on 20 September 2016 by President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Paul Biya called for increased support from the international community to countries, which like Cameroon, have welcomed hundreds of thousands of refugees on their territory.
He said on occasion: "My country is home to more than 350,000 refugees of different nationalities. In the face of this influx, my Government has taken measures to provide them with decent living conditions. In recent years, refugee camps have been established, in cooperation with UNHCR, to accommodate Nigerian refugees fleeing the exactions of the Boko Haram and Central African sect, faced with the political instability of their country. For example, the only camp in Minawao is home to more than 80,000 Nigerian refugees."
