Casablanca, Morocco (ADV) – At least 14 civilians have been killed with machetes by attackers in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, said a local official in the mineral-rich Kivu region where the violence is daily as recalled by the Nobel Prize winner of peace 2018.
Nine civilians were also wounded by machete in the attack that targeted the locality of Rubaya, 60 km north of Goma, known for its coltan mines, said the administrator of the territory, Cosmas Kangakolo.
“The attackers entered my neighborhood, I hid but my two neighbors were killed with a machete.The attackers operated without being disturbed,” said a resident, Pascal.
“There is a whole battalion of FARDC (Congolese army) and a detachment of the police in Rubaya,” said the administrator of the territory.

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to gynecologist Denis Mukwege, who has been treating tens of thousands of women victims of sexual violence for the past 20 years on the sidelines of the conflict in the neighboring province of South Kivu.
Dr. Mukwege lent his image to a global campaign urging large multinationals to control their supply chains to ensure they do not buy “blood ores”, which fuel violence in the east of Congo.
