Monrovia, Liberia (ADV) – Liberians are increasingly becoming impatient and suspicious of President George Weah’s government’s guilt in the missing millions of banknotes.
The suspicion became rife this week with the declaration by President Weah’s Presidential Investigative Team (PIT), that it can handle the issue but could take up to a year.
The PIT boss, Alex Cuffy expressed confidence in the team and noted that foreign investigators as President Weah had hinted, would not be needed.
Those declaration by the PIT on Thursday have hightened suspecion among the civil society groups.
The PIT is composed of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), National Security Agency (NSA), Liberia National Police (LNP), and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

President Weah’s commission further worsened the situation on Thursday when Mr. Cuffy refused to state the names of those being investigated during a press briefing he attended in Monrovia.
He maintained that from Monday, October 8, the team will send a list bearing the names of people, who are not essential to the investigation, to be removed from the traveling ban, and will also send names of people who should be added to the ban.
Though Cuffy did not mention the names of those being questioned by the investigative team, he said that from Monday, October 8, the team will send a list of people « who are not essential to the investigation » to be removed from the traveling ban of 30 people as well as people who should be added to the ban.
Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s son who worked as deputy governor the Bank of Liberia is among those banned from leaving the country in connection with missing banknotes.
Since the missing banknote saga that was unearthed by the media, Liberians have persistently maintained that they do not trust the government to conduct the investigation and there are persistent calls for external support to lend credibility to the process.
