Casablanca, Morocco (ADV) – The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.
Mukwege, a gynecologist and surgeon, has long worked to treat thousands of women and girls affected by rape and sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Dr Mukwege is a gynaecologist who treats victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nadia Murad, an Iraqi human rights activist, Mukwege, 63, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 for “efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

“Dr Mukwege and his staff have treated thousands of patients who have fallen victim to such assaults,” the Nobel committee said.
Mukwege currently lives under the permanent protection of UN peacekeepers at his hospital.
Dr Mukwege was born in 1955 in Bukavu. He went to medical school across the border in Burundi and later studied gynaecology and obstetrics at the University of Angers in France.
He has received many other international awards, including the 2008 UN Human Rights Prize. He was named African of the Year in 2009.
