At least 3 feared dead as plane crashes in Zimbabwe – reports


At least three people, one of them believed to be a Finland national, are feared dead after a light aircraft they were travelling in crashed in south-eastern Zimbabwe, reports say.

The plane crashed at Chemanjenjere Hills in the Tokwane-Ngundu area, about 20km south of Renco Mine in Masvingo South, the state-owned Herald newspaper said.

The report said that it was not clear when the accident occurred.

Boko Haram jihadists abducted around 50 loggers in northeastern Nigerian close to the border with Cameroon, civilian militia and residents told AFP on Thursday.

"Two of the loggers escaped and returned home and broke the news.

MDC's Chamisa expected before Motlanthe commission on Monday – reports

Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa is reportedly now expected to appear before the Kgalema Motlanthe commission probing the August 1 post-election violence on Monday.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, the Movement for Democratic Change leader had previously been expected to appear before the commission this week, but he failed to show up.

Several MDC Alliance leaders, who included vice president Morgan Komichi, national chairperson Tabitha Khumalo, secretary general Douglas Mwonzora and organising secretary Amos Chibaya were present at the commission proceedings on Wednesday, the report said.

Ebola in DRC now infecting newborn babies, UN says

The World Health Organisation says a worrying number of the newest Ebola cases amid Democratic Republic Congo's ongoing outbreak are in patients not usually known to catch the disease: babies.
In an update published this week, the UN health agency reported 36 new confirmed cases of Ebola, including seven in newborn babies and infants younger than 2 years old. Six cases were reported in children aged between 2 and 17 and one case was in a pregnant woman.

While Ebola typically infects adults, as they are most likely to be exposed to the lethal virus, children have been known in some instances to catch the disease when they act as caregivers.

Zim hit by fuel shortages again – reports

Zimbabwean authorities have reportedly urged citizens not to resort to panic buying after long fuel queues resurfaced in the capital Harare and other parts of the country this week.

According to Daily News, motorists were forced to stand in long queues for several hours in Harare, while in Bulawayo, only a few service stations had fuel, said the report.

Motorists said the government had "completely failed" to address the problem of fuel.
