COVID-19: K.O, Msaki, J’Something and Qwabe Twins Collaborate on New Track

South African musicians K.O, Msaki, J’Something and the Qwabe Twins have collaborated on a song titled ‘Rainbow’, to ignite hope in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The song is courtesy of Capitec Bank, which commissioned the artists to write a song of hope. The song’s proceeds will be channelled towards the Solidarity Fund to assist South Africans and local businesses that are in need of funds. ‘Rainbow’ was launched on 29 April and its lyrics were crowdsourced on social media. The song is available on Apple Music (link is external), among other streaming services.

“To ignite hope amid this time, we challenged K.O, J’Something, Msaki and the Qwabe Twins to write a song of hope to get the nation singing together in solidarity,” Capitec Bank said. “People contributed their lyrics by using #SongOfHope on social media, helping the artists create a song for South Africa by South Africans.

“In a time of unprecedented adversity, it has been remarkable to see how South Africans have come together. Our people’s resilience, ability to face hardship with humour, and reach out to one another through ongoing acts of kindness sets this country apart. This song is a special way to honour this.”

K.O said he was moved when South Africans came together to contribute lyrics for the song.

“It’s been amazing to hear everyone clapping at night to thank our phenomenal health professionals," he said. "Now, imagine if we all raise our voices to sing together too? Our streets may be empty, but it’s still possible for us to connect in very special ways. We hope that this song does exactly what it’s intended to do, to inspire hope during a time when many might be concerned about their mental health and well-being.”

K.O said South Africans should be active and creative during the lockdown. “Staying home doesn’t mean sitting around. Consider this time as your second chance at fine-tuning that New Year’s resolution you came into this decade with. Post the lockdown, we’re technically starting 2020 afresh. Be ready.”

J’Something, who is the frontman of popular group Mi Casa, said: “I wish for the safety of our people. I wish for a change in mindset post-COVID-19 that we as a people might be more appreciative of the things that matter and more conscious of our beautiful planet. I also wish for wisdom and guidance for our president [Cyril Ramaphosa] and the leadership as a whole.”

Former Idols SA contestants Viggy and Virginia Qwabe said the song would encourage South Africans to stand together.

“In tough times, it’s wonderful to be able to use our talents to uplift ourselves and others. We are a nation of singers. Now, as we go through this lockdown together, we can encourage one another through a language we all understand – music,” they said.
