In a sad development, human rights, political activist, and author Dr. Patson Dzamara has died. Patson Dzamara who is the younger brother to activist Itai Dzamara who disappeared more than five years ago, has passed away ahead of a scheduled cancer operation.
News of Patson Dzamara’s death was confirmed by a close friend and opposition political leader Nelson Chamisa. Writing on social media, Chamisa said
I’m so devastated..Just received bad news from the Dzamaras.The young Dr Patson Dzamara gone too soon. This has been a terrible 2020!
Businessman Nigel Chanakira also wrote, It is with profound sadness to advise you that Dr Patson Dzamara has passed on this morning ahead of his scheduled cancer operation. Thanks to all those that had been contributing to the Fund where +US$14k had already been raised. I am personally devasted. MHDSRIP.
Dzamara was diagnosed with colon cancer and was supposed to undergo surgery. A fundraising campaign spearheaded by human rights defenders, data and science experts, Team Pachedu, had already raised over US$14 000 out of the U$28,000 needed for the surgery in just one week.
Following Patson’s death, Team Pachedu wrote,
Mr Patson has left us, he passed away around 6am this morning the 26th of August. Our team is in contact with the brother Paddy Dzamara. We thank you all for the donations. The fund will be closed and further statement to be issued. Mumwe wedu watisiya
