Daisy Coleman has died. She was 23 years old. Daisy, who appeared in the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, died by suicide, her mother, Melinda Coleman, shared on Facebook on Tuesday.
According to BBC, she was found dead after her mother called police to check on her.
"My daughter Catherine Daisy Coleman committed suicide tonight," she wrote in her post.
"She was my best friend and amazing daughter. I think she had to make make it seem like I could live without her. I can't," she added. "I wish I could have taken the pain from her! She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it's just not fair. My baby girl is gone."
Daisy's sexual assault case in which she said she was raped at a party in 2012 in Maryville, Missouri when she was 14 years old drew widespread attention.
She alleged she was sexually assaulted while intoxicated by a 17-year-old boy, Matthew Barnett, at a party. She was found the following day by her mother, lying on their front porch, her hair wet and wearing a T-shirt and sweatpants in sub-zero temperatures.
The charge of felony sexual assault against Matthew was later dropped – the Coleman family argued as a result of Barnett's political connections – and he later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of child endangerment.
The second victim in the Netflix documentary, Audrie Pott, also died by suicide in 2012, a few days after she was sexually assaulted.
