Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
According to the Cheshire Constabulary, the 27-year-old defender was arrested after three complainants, over the age of 16, alleged that the abuses occurred between October last year and this month.
The France international was remanded in custody ahead of his appearance at Chester Magistrates’ Court, police said. He is expected to appear in court on Friday.
The spokesperson for the Cheshire Constabulary released a brief statement on Mendy’s arrest. The statement reads,
“Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial.”

“Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.
“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is, therefore, unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”
Benjamin Mendy joined Manchester City in 2017 after transferring from Monaco for a reported £52m. Since then Mendy has won three premier league titles with City. Mendy was also part of the France squad which lifted the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
