“King Richard” star Will Smith is facing “suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted” for his conduct during the 94th Oscars ceremony on Sunday.
This comes after the Academy’s Board of Governors held an emergency meeting after he smacked host Chris Rock.
In a highly damning statement, the Academy also alleged that Will Smith refused to leave the Oscars Ceremony after being asked to do so following the infamous incident.
Smith, who won the best actor award for his performance in King Richard, is being accused of “inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.”
He has been given 15 days’ notice to provide a written response if he so wishes. The Board of Governors will then meet on April 18, where there will decide on the appropriate action.
The Academy also apologised to Chris Rock and thanked him for how he conducted himself.
The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.
Consistent with the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, as well as California law, Mr. Smith is being provided at least 15 days’ notice of a vote regarding his violations and sanctions and the opportunity to be heard beforehand by means of a written response. At the next board meeting on April 18, the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct.
Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.
Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.
Harvey Weinstein was handed a 23-year-long sentence after he was found guilty of the first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape. He has been involved in 81 Oscar wins, winning one himself.
Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Board of Governors, also said it is unlikely that Will Smith will be stripped of his Oscar.
Speaking during an episode of “The View,” Whoopi said, “We’re not going to take that Oscar from him. There will be consequences, I’m sure, but I don’t think that’s what they’ll do.”
