Disgraced Hollywood actor Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, is reported to have unwittingly thrown him under the bus.
Jada is alleged to have declared that she does not need any protection and that her husband grossly overreacted. This comes after Will Smith shocked people when he smacked host Chris Rock at the 94th Oscars ceremony. The “King Richard” star assaulted Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.
After taking his seat following the incident, Will Smith shouted at Chris Rock twice,
“Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth.”
While Will Smith has since apologised twice for the incident, his wife Jada is yet to speak publicly on the matter.
However, a source close to the couple told the publication US Weekly that Jada feels that her husband overreacted and that he should not have smacked Chris Rock.
The source told the publication,
“It was in the heat of the moment and it was him overreacting. He knows that she knows that. They’re in agreement that he overreacted.”
The unnamed source also added Jada can take care of herself and did not need Will to protect her.
They also alleged that Pinkett Smith is ‘not a wallflower’, nor ‘one of these women that needs protecting’.
‘He didn’t need to do what he did,’ they added.
While Smith took responsibility for and apologised for his actions, he is still dealing with the repercussions.
He recently announced his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, saying he had ‘betrayed’ its trust.
Announcing his resignation from the Oscars, Smith said,
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith said. “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
His resignation from the Oscars came after the Academy’s Board of Governors instituted disciplinary proceedings against him.
In a highly damning statement, the Academy also alleged that Will Smith refused to leave the Oscars Ceremony after being asked to do so following the infamous incident.
Following his resignation, the Academy’s president David Rubin said it had accepted Smith’s resignation but would continue its disciplinary proceedings.
