A high-resolution video of the assassination of Japan’s longest-serving former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is making round on social media hours after he was shot at point-blank from behind while making a speech.
Abe was making his campaign speech in the western city of Nara on Friday morning (8 am Zimbabwean time, or 5 pm Japan time) when a man believed to be in his 40s shot him from behind with a double-barrelled shotgun.
From the video, the man who has since been arrested shot Abe on his neck from behind before delivering a second short that allegedly hit Abe on his chest.
The 67-year-old ex-leader immediately collapsed after the second shot.
From the videos, Abe’s security team quickly tackled the suspected shooter seconds after he shot Abe.

According to local publications, Abe was immediately airlifted to a hospital where he died from excessive bleeding upon arrival.
It is not yet clear why the suspected attacker shot Abe.
He [Abe] remains the longest-serving ex-Prime Minister of a country where no leader has ever held the position for more than two years.
He held the office twice in 2006-07 and 2012-20.
Japan will be holding its parliamentary elections this coming Sunday. It has been reported that Abe was out campaigning for one of his close allies in the city. His campaign was only publicized a few hours before he went into the city, hence, it is not yet clear how his shooter got to know of the details of his campain.
This kind of incident is extremely rare in Japan.
