MDC secretary-general Priscilla Misihairabwi–Mushonga has resigned as cracks continue to widen in the Welshman Ncube-led formation ahead of a planned merger with the MDC Renewal Team.
MDC deputy president, Edwin Mushoriwa yesterday said Misihairabwi-Mushonga tendered her resignation from her position as secretary-general with immediate effect to Ncube on Thursday last week.
“The presidency has accepted this resignation and hopes that Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga will continue in her other roles in which she was deployed by the party, such as her role in Parliament,” Mushoriwa said.
“On behalf of the leadership and membership of the party, we sincerely thank Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga for the outstanding and committed service that she rendered to the party in her capacity as secretary-general since her election to that position in February 2011.”
Mushoriwa said Misihairabwi–Mushonga announced to the public through a weekly newspaper that within a period of a few weeks from that date she would be making a decision as to whether she would continue to play a central role in the party.
A few weeks ago, Misihairabwi-Mushonga dared her colleagues to kick her out of the opposition party in Facebook comments where she also described the MDC as a “junkyard”.
“Ouch, it’s sore to be in a junkyard, and am so waiting to be pushed out,” she wrote on her Facebook wall.
The MDC youth assembly last week wrote to Ncube calling for the ouster of Misihairabwi-Mushonga for trashing the opposition party.
There were reports that Ncube had allegedly fallen out with Misihairabwi-Mushonga over positions as the opposition party readies to merge with the MDC Renewal Team currently led by former MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti. Misihairabwi-Mushonga and Ncube could not be reached for comment yesterday.
